Day 2: Cabot launches Evolve Sustainable Solutions
The Cabot Corporation has announced the launch of Evolve Sustainable Solutions at Tire Technology Expo 2023 – the company’s latest technology platform for advancing sustainable reinforcing carbons.
With the release of the platform, Cabot aims to develop a range of products which provide sustainable content with reliable performance at an industrial scale. It will achieve this by leveraging circular value chains and materials recovered from end-of-life tires, renewable and bio-based materials and processes which reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
As a result of Cabot’s efforts, two new products have been launched which are the company’s first-ever International Sustainability and Carbon Certification-certified (ISCC PLUS) solutions.
The first product is Vulcan 7H-C circular reinforcing carbon, a reinforcing material made from ISCC PLUS-certified tire pyrolysis oil derived from end-of-life tires. The material provides ‘optimal dispersibility and extrusion characteristics to rubber compounds and delivers drop-in performance comparable to Vulcan 7H carbon black or ASTM N234 carbon black’.
The second product released by Cabot this week is Sterling SO-RC110 circular reinforcing carbon, a semi-reinforcing material containing 10% recovered carbon material. Leveraging the company’s co-pelletization technology, Sterling SO-RC110 circular reinforcing carbon partners ISCC PLUS-certified recovered carbon material with its Sterling SO carbon black to provide performance comparable to ASTM N550 carbon black.
“Evolve Sustainable Solutions is Cabot’s technology platform for bringing sustainable reinforcing carbons with reliable performance at industrial scale,” explains Aatif Misbah, vice president and general manager of sustainable solutions and reinforcement materials at Cabot. “This is something that the rubber and tire industry has been looking for, for quite some time, and this is just one more part in the journey for net zero carbon emissions for Cabot.
“The platform is built on three pillars. The first one is Recovered, this is reinforcing carbons made from materials coming out of the tire pyrolysis process, such as tire pyrolysis oil and reclaimed carbons. The second pillar is Renewable, these are the reinforcing carbons made from bio-based feedstocks or other bio-based materials. The final pillar is Reduced, which is reinforcing carbons made from a demonstrably lower Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas footprint.”
