Carbon nanotubes: Expanding the tire performance space
OCSiAl, 26 January 2017

Recent studies initiated by OCSiAl and carried out by independent laboratories have shown that TUBALL™ single wall carbon nanotubes are able to dramatically expand the tire performance space, removing the usual trade-offs faced by the tire industry. At ultra-low concentrations of just 0.1–0.2 wt.%, these nanotubes significantly improve the abrasion resistance, energy efficiency, wet grip, and electrical conductivity of most rubber compounds.

GLM (Geometry Laser Measurements) will debut its new 3D profile scanner. The HDP (high-definition profiler) measures tread segments contactlessly on mounted tires, providing extremely accurate results. A 100mm measuring length can be recorded in the circumferential direction, with a scan width of 450mm to 600mm. Single passenger car tires and twin tires on trucks are measured at a speed of 20mm/s with a resolution of 0.1mm. The recorded treads are shown in a colour-scaled 2D and 3D display image, where automatic tread depth recognition is processed. Other functions include measurement of crown radius, heel and toe, and calculation of non-uniform abrasion for detection of bad tire alignment.
